When you’re sick or injured, knowing where to go for care can sometimes be confusing. At Kossuth Regional Health Center, your care options include primary care, acute care and emergency care. Choosing the right setting can help you receive the appropriate care for your needs.
When to Visit Your Primary Care Provider
Your primary care provider (PCP) should be your first point of contact for routine, preventive and non-emergency medical care. Your provider gets to know you and your health history and can help manage your health throughout every stage of life.
When an unexpected illness or minor injury comes up, contact your primary care clinic first to see if a same-day appointment is available.
Primary care may be appropriate for:
- Routine wellness visits
- Preventive care
- Immunizations
- Chronic condition management, such as diabetes or high blood pressure
- Rashes
- Cold and flu symptoms
- Gastrointestinal concerns
- Minor injuries, including sprains and strains
- Sore throat
- Pink eye
- Lower back pain
- Animal or insect bites
- Urinary tract infections
- Pelvic wellness
- Ear pain
When to Use Acute Care
Sometimes you need medical attention sooner, but your primary care provider may not have a same-day appointment available. KRHC Acute Care provides another option for patients with non-life-threatening illnesses or injuries that need timely attention.
If you are unable to get a same-day appointment with your primary care provider, ask whether Acute Care may be appropriate for your needs.
Acute Care may be appropriate for concerns such as:
- Minor injuries
- Minor cuts or lacerations
- Rashes
- Cold and flu symptoms
- Sore throat
- Pink eye
- Lower back pain
- Animal or insect bites
- Urinary tract infections
- Ear pain
Acute Care is not intended to replace your primary care provider. Your PCP remains an important partner for ongoing care, follow-up and management of your overall health.
When to Visit the Emergency Department
For serious injuries or severe illnesses that may require immediate treatment or hospitalization, go to the Emergency Department. For a life-threatening emergency, call 911.
The KRHC Emergency Department is available 24/7 to care for medical emergencies.
Emergency care may be appropriate for:
- Severe allergic reactions
- Chest pain or symptoms of a heart attack
- Stroke symptoms
- Difficulty breathing
- Severe burns
- Seizures
- Serious eye or head injuries
- Severe abdominal pain
- Serious or suspected broken bones
- Rapid or uncontrolled bleeding
- Drug overdose or poisoning
- Serious falls
- High fevers or other severe symptoms requiring immediate attention
- Infants requiring immediate medical care
