General Surgery Instructions
General instructions before your surgical procedure
The following are general instructions for surgical patients who have a scheduled procedure at KRHC. If you received specific directions from your surgical doctor or nurse for your procedure, please follow those specific directions.
- On the day of your scheduled surgery, please arrive approximately one hour before your procedure to allow time for registration and paperwork.
- Go to the hospital registration desk, located near the main hospital entrance. Patient parking is available near the main hospital entrance on the west side of the hospital. Wheelchairs are available in the registration area, if needed.
- Bring a list of the medications you are taking, or the actual medications in their original containers.
- Please bring a driver. You will not be able to drive the day of your surgery and will need someone to drive you home.
- If you use a C-PAP machine at home, please bring it with you for surgery.
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery.
- Please do not bring money or valuable items with you. You may want to bring something comfortable to wear home.
- Please notify the doctor or nurse if you are taking Aspirin, products containing Aspirin, or any drug such as Coumadin, Plavix, or Ibuprofen. These medications need to be discontinued for a few days before your surgery. They will increase the risk of bleeding.
- Do not take any form of diabetic medication on the morning of your surgery.
- You should stop taking over the counter medication, vitamins, supplements or non-prescription medications for one week prior to surgery, unless your doctor states it is okay.
- Please follow these pre-operative bathing instructions the night before or the morning of your surgery.
- One week before your surgery, please stop taking all over-the-counter medications, vitamins, supplements or non-prescription medications, unless you have your doctor’s approval to continue taking them.
- In addition, please notify the doctor or nurse if you are on any Aspirin, Aspirin-containing products, or any drug such as Coumadin, Plavix or Ibuprofen. These medications can increase the risk of bleeding, and should be discontinued for a few days before your surgery.

What To Expect
Surgical operating rooms and waiting area are located on the second floor of the hospital. To get there, enter through the main hospital doors of KRHC. Take elevator (L) or the stairs to get to the second floor. The waiting area is just to the right of the elevator and directly across the door to the stairs. Support persons can enjoy complimentary coffee, tea and hot chocolate while they wait for their loved one.
After surgery, patients are taken to the surgery recovery area where vital signs (blood pressure, pulse and respiration) will be monitored. This room is designed and staffed to care for several patients at a time. You may be aware of other patients and activities going on around you. If you are waiting for someone having surgery, please remain in the waiting area. The nurse or doctor will look for you there following the patient’s procedure.
