Kossuth Regional Health Center is proud to share that Dr. Brent Owen has been selected as the 2024 Family Medicine Community Preceptor of the Year by the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine.
This recognition shines a light on the pivotal role that Dr. Owen plays in shaping the future of healthcare professionals. As a teacher, expert, and mentor, Dr. Owen provides learning experiences outside the standard classroom allowing medical students a glimpse into the daily life of a healthcare provider. He assists students in the application of their knowledge and skills in a direct patient care setting at KRHC.
The University of Iowa acknowledges outstanding contributions made by preceptors each year by awarding the Family Medicine Preceptor of the Year Award. Nominations come from medical students who recommend preceptors they have worked with during their clinical year.
For over ten years Dr. Owen has chosen to give back to the medical profession and precept a handful of second- or third-year medical students from the University of Iowa. His choice to teach gives students valuable experience in both a community family medicine practice and an academic family medicine practice. His knowledge and experience help future healthcare providers learn to deliver the compassionate and skillful care patients deserve.
“It’s clear from student comments that he is truly making a positive impact on each student who rotates with him at KRHC,” said Jeff Quinlan, MD FAAFP, Chair and Department Executive Officer Professor of the University of Iowa Department of Family Medicine. “We truly appreciate Dr. Owen’s hard work and long-standing dedication to medical student education.”
The medical team at Kossuth Regional Health Center takes pride in the role they play in educating students in the healthcare field including nursing students, certified nursing assistant students, and residents. Staff members in the inpatient unit also play an important role helping to educate the medical students on rotation at KRHC.
“I absolutely love that Dr. Owen received this award,” said Dr. Jeff Doolittle, KRHC Chief Medical Officer. “This is a big deal and speaks towards his vision to change to a non-traditional rotation. It also shows what an impact he is having on the students the teaches.”
