Our History

Kossuth Regional Health Center (KRHC) began with the opening of St. Ann Hospital, which was the result of more than five years of effort to secure a modern hospital for the people of Kossuth County. The first formal meeting occurred in April, 1945, which included Dr. Melvin Bourne and the Sisters of Mercy.

In 1946, it was estimated that a 50-bed hospital would cost $400,000. The Sisters of Mercy would raise $200,000; $100,000 would be raised locally and the remaining $100,000 would come from a federal grant. However, complying with all the requirements of the federal government delayed the project, so the Sisters of Mercy agreed to pay the balance of the cost over and above the amount subscribed locally, out of their own funds. The ground breaking ceremonies took place on August 13, 1948. St. Ann Hospital, under the management of the Sisters of Mercy was completed and dedicated on October 3, 1949. The final cost of the hospital was $650,000.

The hospital continued to operate under the Sisters of Mercy until September 1967 when the Sisters of St. Benedict purchased the building. It was under their operation until January 1973, at which time it was taken over by Kossuth County and became Kossuth County Hospital.

In the summer of 1978, a group of citizens realized that the best way to recruit more physicians to Kossuth County was to build a clinic. The Kossuth Medical Center Foundation raised over $125,000 to secure FHA financing to begin construction on a new clinic.

In December of 1985, the Board of Trustees entered into a management agreement with St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City, Iowa, which was effective January 1, 1986. This evolved to be the Mercy Medical Center – North Iowa network.

Today, Kossuth Regional Health Center operates a 25-bed critical access hospital, two physician clinics, home care, hospice and public health nursing agencies. KRHC employs approximately 215 individuals and maintains Master Affiliation and Professional Services Agreements with MercyOne – North Iowa Medical Center.

Facility

Facility Updates at KRHC

Kossuth Regional Health Center operates from a Master Facility Plan, a document approved by the KRHC Board of Trustees that provides an overall look at the KRHC campus and facility to determine the best and most efficient way to use the existing space and accommodate the needs of the rapidly changing health care environment. Updates to the KRHC campus over the years include:

  • Respiratory Care Area

The clinic renovation of the respiratory care area was completed in July 2021. The need for a designated respiratory care area was brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and the timing of the project coincided with available funds from the CARES Act (COVID-19 funding). During the Covid 19 pandemic. The respiratory care area provided a separate place for KRHC staff to evaluate and treat patients with respiratory symptoms in a way that helped protect other patients throughout KRHC.

  • Radiology

The radiology renovation was completed in 2016. This project created additional rooms so each modality could have a seperate treatment space. Shortly afterwards, 3D mammography came to KRHC.

  • Emergency Room & Lab

The emergency rooms and lab underwent a complete renovation in 2012-2013. The improvements created a more private and user-friendly space for patients and staff, which also offered the space for upgraded equipment in the ER.

  • Obstetrics Suites

The three obstetrics suites underwent renovation in 2012 to add new flooring, ceilings, furnishings and equipment. Previous to these changes, the Family Birthing Center opened at Kossuth Regional Health Center in May of 1995. The obstetrics department was relocated from the second floor to the east wing of the third floor, immediately adjacent to the medical-surgical unit, to allow for the most efficient use of staff resources. Three maternity suites were renovated to be utilized for Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum (LDRP).

  • Three Story Hospital Addition

KRHC broke ground on the three story addition in March of 2009 and completed the project in the spring of 2011. The hospital’s addition allowed for private inpatient rooms, expanded rehabilitation area, new pre-operative and recovery rooms for surgical patients, new dining center, loading dock and space for an updated purchasing department.

  • Transition To A Tobacco Free Campus

On November 16, 2006, Kossuth Regional Health Center became a tobacco free campus. This initiative applies to all staff, patients and visitors and includes cigarettes, chewing tobacco and all other forms of tobacco. The policy does not allow any tobacco products in the KRHC facility, in the parking lots, in personal vehicles on KRHC grounds or in KRHC vehicles (at any time on or off campus).

  • Surgery Renovation & Expansion

Construction for the Surgery Renovation & Expansion project began in March 2000 and the Ribbon Cutting was held in May 2001. The project provides a state of the art surgical facility for our general surgeon and the many specialists who see patients in this facility on a regular basis. The improved and enlarged facility allows more sophisticated procedures to be performed at KRHC. The Kossuth Regional Health Center Foundation raised $750,000 to help fund this project.

  • The Link

Kossuth Regional Health Center completed The Link in the summer of 1999. This project created two new physician suites, administrative offices and conference room, rehab services in the lower level and a common entrance for the hospital and physician clinic. It also created a larger and much more visible Gift Shop, operated by the KRHC Auxiliary.

  • Emergency Care & Outpatient Services

Responding to the changes in the healthcare industry towards more comprehensive outpatient services and addressing the inadequacies of a 1949 facility, June 1991, marked the completion of the John & Agnes Dreesman Memorial Addition. The 11,000 square foot construction project and 9,000 square foot renovation project updated and expanded the emergency room, radiology, lab, business offices and outpatient specialty clinic area.
